Avant STAMP

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction.

The Avant STAMP™ (STAndards-based Measurement of Proficiency) language test was created at the University of Oregon to improve language-learning outcomes and support excellence in language programs. STAMP™ enables teachers to be effective in improving proficiency outcomes, and empowers administrators to make better informed decisions about curriculum and teacher training by delivering accurate data on students’ proficiency levels.

Language testing is available for students to earn credits toward their graduation requirements in Languages Other Than English (LOTE).

  1. Students may earn up to three credits, depending on the results of the test. A minimum of two credits are required for the foundation high school graduation plan.
  2. Students may test in a language in order to earn credit(s) to be placed in a higher level of that language course.

Students must contact the front office to register for language testing. Please note that this assessment must be taken on campus.

The Avant STAMP is available to all secondary students. The assessment is designed to measure a student’s level of proficiency in a foreign language. It is an online test that requires students to read, listen, speak, and write in a foreign language. The student must know how to type in the foreign language for which they wish to be tested, using specific characters if necessary.  The Avant STAMP exam has four components: reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Students must demonstrate proficiency in all four components to receive the corresponding course credit, and credit shall be awarded at the level of proficiency on the lowest scoring component.

The following languages are available for Avant STAMP: Arabic, English/ESOL, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin (Simplified), Mandarin (Traditional), Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish.

A score of 2 or 3 (Novice-Mid to Novice-High) or higher on the Avant STAMP examination shall results in credit according to the table below.
