ACTFL AAPPL

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) is dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction.

The ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is a web-based proficiency and performance assessment of K-12 standards-based language learning. It assesses tasks across the three modes of communication as defined by the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages.

AAPPL tasks are informed by the functions described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and ratings are assigned according to the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners. Score reports identify a proficiency range along with pinpointing a narrower performance score.

Language testing is available for students to earn credits toward their graduation requirements in Languages Other Than English (LOTE).

  1. Students may earn up to three credits, depending on the results of the test. A minimum of two credits are required for the foundation high school graduation plan.
  2. Students may test in a language in order to earn credit(s) to be placed in a higher level of that language course.

Students must contact the front office to register for language testing. Please note that this assessment can be taken at home.

The American-Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Assessment Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) is available to all secondary students. The assessment is designed to measure a student’s level of proficiency in a foreign language. It is an online test that requires students to read, listen, speak, and write in a foreign language. The student must know how to type in the foreign language for which they wish to be tested, using specific characters if necessary.

The AAPPL exam has four components: interpersonal listening/speaking, presentational writing, interpretative reading, and interpretive listening.  Students must demonstrate proficiency in all four components to receive the corresponding course credit, and credit shall be awarded at the level of proficiency on the lowest scoring component.

The following languages are available for AAPPL: Arabic, Chinese, English/ESOL, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Thai.

A score of Novice-Mid to novice-High or higher on the ACTFL AAPPL examination shall results in credit according to the table below.
